Peoples Choice Award winner and featured piece at the Fairfield Visual Arts Association juried exhibition. This first step in creating this very unique piece was to stain the entire canvas with a bottle of Conn Creek Winery’s 1994 Limited Release Cabernet Sauvignon. After staining the canvas, I created the texture by using a mixture of acrylic medium blended with paint and the same Limited Release Cabernet Sauvignon. Following application of the textured portion and the subsequent drying time, I began the painting process which consisted of over 30 layers of very thin semi-transparent paint, with each layer and color of the paint being infused with the same wine. Using thin layers of paint in this manner is called a wash, and because the wash is so delicate, each layer must completely dry prior to applying the next. After the final wash was dry, I began the final painting process of highlighting some of the raised areas using a very fine paint brush and more wine-infused paint. Once the painting dried for two weeks I applied the finishing varnish, then it was off to the framer.
